As we are now firmly into 2025 and things have slowed down a bit after the holidays, it's the perfect time to reflect on the past year and look ahead to new possibilities. For survivors of abuse, prioritizing health and healing can be a powerful way to reclaim peace and joy. Here are three essential tips to guide your journey toward health and healing this year.

1. Reflect on What Worked in 2024

Start by evaluating the strategies that supported you last year. Did a morning walk ground your day? Did journaling provide clarity? Embrace and build on these practices in 2025.

At the same time, be honest about what didn't work. For example, if endless scrolling on social media left you feeling anxious, consider setting boundaries around screen time. Studies from World Psychiatry  show that consistent, positive habits play a key role in improving mental health outcomes.

This reflection isn’t about perfection; it’s about creating a life that truly supports your growth and happiness.

2. Intercept Triggers Before They Impact You

For many survivors, certain triggers can evoke painful memories or emotions. Identifying and proactively managing these triggers can be a game-changer for your mental well-being. For instance, if a particular place stirs distressing memories, plan a different route. Research from the American Psychological Association shows that avoiding known triggers and stressors can reduce anxiety and help you feel more in control.

Think of it as building a protective bubble of peace around yourself—one small, intentional choice at a time.

3. Detach Actions from Feelings

Too often, we let emotions dictate our actions: “I’m sad, so I won’t try,” or “I’m tired, so I’ll skip it.” While honoring your feelings is essential, growth happens when you take action despite them.

Reframe moments of hesitation. Instead of thinking, “I don’t feel like it,” try saying, “This is hard, but I’ll do it anyway because it matters.” Consistent action leads to greater personal achievement and emotional resilience.

Remember: it’s not about having endless motivation. It’s about showing up for yourself, one step at a time.

Define Your Own Success

Success looks different for everyone. Take time to define what it means for you—whether it’s peace, financial stability, joy, or something else entirely. By carving your own path, you ensure that your efforts align with your heart’s true desires.

You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
